Gap between gearbox and engine block

Was fitting the gearbox to my 413 engine the other day and noticed that there is a gap at the bottom of the gearbox where it meets the engine block. Its only about an inch gap but leave the fly wheel and clutch open to the elements. Is there some sort of plate/gasket that goes between the two? My apologies if this is a silly question.
