Steel?

Post by 12callum » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:52 am

Where do the local guys get there steel from? doing the virtual lift and some patching up on the body work? Roughly what gauge/type and thickness do I need to get? Thanks.

I usually use 1.2mm sometimes 1.6mm if I want a bit of extra strength, think I used 1.6 for all my arch work.

Best thing to do is find your local sheet metal fabrication firm and see if they have some offcuts you can buy, usually works out cheaper than the local steel supplier.

I've only either got it from the metal skip at work or a supplier in Devizes when I was working down that way.

I found 1.6mm was good for arches but you need something a bit thinner for the rest of the body.

As scottie says, local fabricators are a good one! I used to get all sorts of bits from the skip outside my last local welding shop... Just make sure you ask them first! ;)

Failing that, you can get sheet metal from eBay at an OK-ish price from ebay sometimes, just watch out for the shipping costs!

I don't think I would ever buy steel off eBay, its always a lot more expensive than from your local metal supplier.

Ive had 300x300x1.2 for about £6 delivered I think... not bad considering it comes to you! ;)

Admittedly though scottie is right and I would normally go to a metal supplier

Probably make some pretty damn substantial armour out of it though.

For bodywork, most of mine has come from washing machines, tumble driers, fridges....
