I have a little bit of an oil leak, and im burning a lot of oil. Compression test indicates the head gasket is ok. The initial diagnosis looks like there is oil leaking from the fuel pump gasket, is this possible? as in didnt think oil would go up there, and secondly, is there anyway oil could be getting into the fuel in the fuel pump, which would explain both my issues in one!

Chances are it will be valve stem oil seals or piston rings. Does it smoke less once its warmed up?

What were your compression test readings?


if the diaphragms fail in the fuel pump it will just leak oil out of a hole in the bottom or stop pumping fuel, doubt it would mix oil with fuel or run too well of you were pumping a mixture of oil and fuel into the carb either
Fuel pump gasket is an easy fix, 2 bolts remove pump, clean up surface, fit new gasket and refit.

compression test read 7.2bar across all 4, that sound about right!? I have a fuel pump gasket on order, so thats the physical leak hopefully sorted, regarding valve stem oil seals and or piston rings, is that a big/expensive job?

Valve stem oil seals are pretty easy, you can do then with the head in place but its less fiddly to remove the head, I would start with those as they are the easy fix, might as well lap the valves and change cam seals etc while the head is apart as well.

If that doesn't fix the smoke then it'll be rings and that's an engine out and pretty much full strip down to change them.

forgive my ignorance but, 'lap the valves'??

Have a look on youtube, there are loads of videos. I just searched lapping valves.
