SJ slides way too easy, how help prevent this??

so when i drive in the wet my SJ love to slide, but i dont love it at all lol, it was raining last week and i managed to do a 180 in it which scared the life out of me, managed to control it and stop it safely but the point is i dont want it to do it so easily lol..

not been driving long so still getting used to driving a RWD car, my dad says that the tires wont be helping as theyre old tires so the rubber will be hard, making it lose grip with the tarmac very easily, it doesnt help that the carb is running spot on so it has got alot of power behind it lol

so what can i do to stop her sliding so easily? bigger tires? change the ratios?

i know most of you will probably say dont be such a yobo and accelerate so hard, but it does it even when accelorating a little bit on a corner, ie a roundabout or just a tight corner..

as ive said ive been driving about 4 months so still getting used to the car and driving...

cheers guys..

Having a boggo sami on road tyres.

Id say you have to give it more than a bit of poke to get
Its tail out. A little flick and blipping the throttle helps

What brand tyres are you running?
How old?

The correct size tyres should reduce it, either 195s or 205s. They should dispace the correct amount of water on a wet road based on the SJs weight.

Tyre choice makes a lot of difference. Cheap and nasty budget tyres are useless. Go for a tried and tested tread pattern like a BFG A/T.

Bigger tyres will displace less water because of foot print / weight of the SJ. This is one of the causes of aquaplaning.

Sensible driving too. If i drive mine sensibly in the wet its absolutely fine on 33" MTs with a 1.6. If i drive it badly / like a loony it is lethal.

Just get some different tyres. I only have colway mud terrains and have to try to make it slide.
I remember having a motorcycle with too hard a rubber on it and it was a nightmare to ride.
I couldn't keep up with my mates just riding normally in the wet, the ass end was constantly twitching.
Softer rubber sorted it no problem.
As with all tyres the harder they are the longer they will last but the less they grip.
You have to find a good compromise.

I've got gt2000's think they're general, I got the wheels with tires last year so no idea how old they are..

I do drive it as safe as possible, I change gear as soon as I can, usually between 2500rpm and 3000rpm..

New tyres. Plain and simple.

When I first got mine it had old, hard A/T tyres on it. I could slide it around in the dry let alone getting sideways around roundabouts. I swear those tyres had more grip in snow than on dry roads.

I have now got new-ish road tyres on all four wheels, though the spare is still one of the old A/Ts. The fronts are these: http://www.tyrewizard.co.uk/4x4-tyres-c ... -tyre-p408
And the rears, which are much better are these: http://www.goodyear.eu/uk_en/tires/4x4/ ... eedIndex=H

What I've found is that before, with the hard tyres, my SJ used to oversteer. With those cheap tyres on the front and good ones on the rear, whilst having much more grip than before, she understeers rather than oversteers. If I ever have the wheels off I'll be swapping the fronts and rears.

halfway down this link it can tell you how your tyres are. like the week number of the year they was produced and what year.

Cheers guys, ed, I'm running 10j wheels so can't really put 195's on it lol not unless I can find some wide offset wheels teamed with spacers to make it match my arches again..

Been looking at maxxis bravo ht's only £300 a set of 4, they're road tires, think they're mud and snows, not sure..

I try to drive a exanomically as possible to keep as good a mpg as I can..

Oh, I forgot you were running wide wheels. Still, I'd recommend new rubber. A new set of A/Ts in the size you need should see you right. Supposedly those Goodyear Wranglers have an 'Anti-aquaplane' tread pattern and I'm pretty sure they'll have them in the size you're after, trouble is cost.

Until you get new tyres just don't accelerate around or out of corners in the wet. just keep the throttle neutral, I.e not accelerating or slowing down, maybe a little on the slowing down side.
