Hi guys

Pretty sure I have a leak from the t/box front input oil seal, not surprised as the sj had been hardly used for many years and this seal is above stationery oil level so probably brittle now, only leaks when actually in motion. Can't actually see the leak but but seems the only possible source .

I have done a search and can't find a thread seems strange, the question is how to change the input oil seal ?,
is it possible with t/box in place, is it possible lying on my back on garage floor, is there space to do it, any special tools needed.

any directions much appreciated.

steve

I would first take the prop shaft off and check the uj's are ok and move freely. A stiff uj can cause the seals to leak when in motion.

I would say you need some form of tool to hold the flange when undoing the nut. I've only removed the transfer box handbrake and that was dam tight. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just a length of angle iron with a couple of holes in.

To remove the nut I usually stick an assistant in it with their foot on the brake. Then just use a big bar to crack the nut.

Thanks for the info

If I understand correctly the only difficult bit is getting the nut holding the flange on off, so is there enough room lying under the sj to get to the input prop shaft area and get angry with the nut, I don't have access to air tools so brute force will be needed.
I can see that both outputs would be possible but the input, come on someone must have tried on a garage floor, please tell me it's possible.

I managed to swap transfer boxes, fit the flanges and torque up the nuts with the transfer case in place in a field at a 4x4 show.

It's a doddle!

Thanks Jordi, that's the kick up the backside I need to start the job, just got to order the seal and hope the weather does not get too cold soon.
