4wheel drive problem??
4wheel drive problem??
Hi,
I bought a sj 413 a couple of day ago so dont know to much about them.
Iv been tying to drive it off road but keep getting stuck in easy places.
When im stuck it only seems to be the back wheels that are spinning and not the fronts. This doesnt seem right to me, so could there be a problem with the 4 wheel drive???
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: 4wheel drive problem??
first thing check if you have free wheel hubs fitted they sit in the centers of your front wheels they have a switch on the front, you need to select them to the 'lock' position they might be stiff to move but they do and there is a little arrow on the switch to show what position its in (lock or free)

Yes it has got them. I turned them to lock (they were pretty stiff) but made no difference. Could they be broken?

select the small transmission lever to 4wd,, across to the right, then foward for low or back for high..
Re: 4wheel drive problem??
just a thought!! have a look under your car and make sure you have a front propshaft.
Re: 4wheel drive problem??
yeah it goes into 4wheel drive ok, but just does not seem to work properly.
Yeah it has got a front drive shaft.
Is there any way i can check if the hubs are locking correctly??

Re: 4wheel drive problem??
yes, to check the hubs have locked properly, lock both the front hubs, lift one of the front wheel off the ground and turn it, if both are locked correctly, as the wheel (which is off the ground) spins the front prop shaft should spin if it doesnt, one hasn't locked properly,
if you want to check that your t box is going into 4wd okay (while the wheel is jacked up) put the tbox into 4 wd and try and spin your raised wheel, you shouldn't be able to spin it. There will be some directional play (i.e. turn it forward and back) but its just backlash in the gears,

Re: 4wheel drive problem??
I just checked the hubs as you said, and the prop shaft didnt move the wheel just span on its own. S i think one or both of the hubs are not locking

Re: 4wheel drive problem??
I cant find a write up but its not too hard, do you have aisin ones (the metal type?)
look at this,
The bottom one is how yours work (if they are aisin), they only fit together one way so have a play, you might find a broken spring or pawl, they will need greasing up when you fit them.

Be careful when you take them to bits. I had one that wasnt engaged and it went ping all over the workshop!
