Measure the size of the inlet and outlet. HIF is the type of carb, 44 is 44mm. A picture would probably be enough to identify it as a HIF or not

I measured my HIF44 and came up with 46mm...
I think (but don't quote me) that a HS3 is the same size as a HIF44. HS2 is equal to a HIF38.
So if it's a HS3, you can probably still use it, although I don't know if the float chamber design is as good for an offroader or not. The HIF's are (or so I'm told) brilliant for an offroader because the float chamber design means they don't starve when you've got your truck at a funny angle.
Like Ed says, pics would help!

This is what a (slightly dirty) HIF44 carb looks like...
you can visually usually tell which model it is by the dimensions of the dashpot... as lots of the different models and sizes of carb have a different looking dashpot

As said above though, you should definitely measure the throat to make sure... the next sizes above and below are 50mm and 38mm so it should be quite obvious what type it is
if you need bits for it....
http://www.sucarb.co.uk is the place to go
in this diagram the 44mm dashpot is pictured to the right
