U-Joint Replacment in Southampton

Hey!

Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere decent in or around Southampton to get U-joints replaced? Both of the ones in my rear drive shaft have play in them and with a 500 mile round trip coming up I want them replaced!

Used My Purple Garage here before as they had good reviews but they ripped me off on parts (£100 for one U-joint!!) so looking for somewhere else...

On the same topic, I've always had this awful shudder when accelerating (usually in 2nd) and noticed today when I took the shaft off the two sections were 180 degrees out of alignment. Can anyone say from experience whether the shudder could have been caused by this?

Thanks!

Yes the prop shaft parts have been taken apart at some point, the alignment marks should be lined up and can cause prop vibration if they aren't.

As for the UJs do them yourself! You only need basic hand tools
A vice and circlip pliers can come in handy but are not essential
Check out our guide

Thanks! I was a bit wary about trying it myself but that guide seems to have cleared everything up! I'll give removing them a go today.

So I took them out today. Had a bit of trouble getting the first one out but then realised i had missed a step in the guide! haha, second one came out easy. Now to order the new parts and get back to driving in rear wheel drive!

Put the new UJs in today with my new 1Ton press! :D (after waiting a while for them to be sent from Germany! Suzuki in So'ton wanted £109 per UJ!!) One yoke was slightly worn, causing the bearing case to turn inside it instead of the UJ turning inside the bearing case, sorted that with some Loctite 660 metal glue, designed for bonding things just like this, just hope it works at £30 a bottle! haha

Also noticed the two parts of the shaft were 180 degrees out of alignment so hopefully fixing that will help with the shudder I was having. Saying that, i've still had most of the shudder whilst driving in front wheel drive so im not convinced the rear prop is the cause... any suggestions for what could be causing this are more than welcome!

have you got free wheel hubs? if it wobbles on free its probably a wheel bearing or something...

Take the cap off and check the mechanism is connected to the spring. In the free-wheeling hubs
