Starter Motor Problem

Post by The Bird Man » Wed Feb 19, 2014 7:20 pm

Evening chaps, tried firing up the SJ today but the starter motor doesn't seem to engage with the fly wheel, ( Well not every time, it's hit and miss, more often than not it doesn't engage) The bendix spins and returns okay as I bench tested it but when I put it back on the engine it doesn't seem to catch. Any ideas to why this is ?

What do the teeth on the fly wheel look like through the inspection hole on the bell housing?

Forgot to mention, the flywheel teeth all look good. No sign of ware, same on the bendix :)

Does it sound like it's grinding as though it's flicking out but not catching or not flicking out? Can you hear the solenoid click?

Yeah, tried to swap it with the 1.3 starter but realized it doesn't fit.

Last time I had that problem it turned out to be a dodgy battery terminal. If I turned they key with the bonnet open you could see the terminal sparking when the starter kicked in.

And mine used to do it if the battery didn't have enough juice.

Try and turn the drive gear in the starter by hand... it should only turn one way (does on all the ones I have anyway).

if not i believe its broken!
