8v with carb is definitely the easiest, pretty much bolt in and go (with adapter plate and skinny starter motor) SU should work fine on it with some re-tuning, will probably need a new needle and springs. Cable connection? Did you actually check the other end is spinning? if its broken in the middle, the tbox end can spin fine but the other end will stay put
