Plastic wheel arch protectors gotta go?

Just started stripping the new vitara for waxoyingl and as my old vit didnt have plastic wheel arch protectors I wasn't sure what to expect but found after removing them they saved alot of the upper bodywork but have assisted in the progressive now apparent rotting of the lower arches towards sills because of collecting waste... should I scrap them completely or treat/waxoyl and refit? It's not doing tons of offroading mainly standard driving and the odd muddy weekend trail. TIA
