Renewing Gear Box Fluid

Post by Frenchy » Wed Apr 25, 2018 2:50 pm

First time I've done it,can't seem to find a diagram online to show where the level, drain and filler plugs are.On a US site it looks like you fill from just next to the gear stick?

I know, it just looks as though the filler is pointing downwards, is a pump needed to fill or can you use a long tube and do it from inside the engine bay?

I did mine from underneath, I did use a pump (oil can with hose) though.

Thanks Darrell,I think what confused me (not difficult) is that I saw a diagram online which showed a drain plug and filler as yours does but a level as well. And as per usual can't find it now.

I use a large syringe. Fill it till it overflows and that's it.
If it ticks over...leave it

Did it along with the coolant,I'm in a mountainous area,so hard to find flat ground so I overfilled it by quite a lot, until I found a flatish area near a neighbours driveway.let it run out of the 12mm level plug until it was just dripping. Can much damage be done by over filling?

Yes, you've ruined everything - you're better off just giving me the Zuk. :brows:

Overfilling an engine can lock it up (hydraulic it) by forcing oil past the rings and into the combustion chamber - very possibly killing it. Or causing a "runaway" if it's a diesel. Overfilling a gearbox can reduce power by churning up the oil, but it's unlikely to kill it. I'm not a mechanic though, so perhaps I've missed something - but that's what I've always been told.
