Uj ratlle

Post by marve114 » Tue Jun 04, 2019 8:00 am

Hi guys

I’ve got a rattle coming from my sj sounds like ujs

Only does it when your coasting along with the clutch peddle down
No noise under acceleration or deceleration

I’ve changed the transfer box thinking it was that still doing it

Parking brake on prop ok

Had a pull around on the props seem ok

Got a slightly sloppy uj on the end of the gearbox propshaft

Front prop had a sticky notchy uj but I lubed that and seems ok

Transferbox does had a RW CRADDLE could that be bent ?

I can’t see anything fouling

Am I right in thinking you have SPOA? Just need to go and check all the basics I recon.

Engine Mounts
UJs
Clutch release bearing
Tbox mounts
Props are well greased
Prop input and output angles are set properly (in case you're getting phasing)

Do you feel anything funny with the car? Is it steering, braking, accelerating ok etc?

It only makes this noise when coasting along with the clutch pushed in

Acceleration and deceleration it’s fine

Car feels a bit vibby with the noise other wise ok

Inclined to say check your release bearing but not sure that makes sense as thats more likely to make noise with the clutch released not pressed. Still, check it anyway ;)

That's when things are most likely to fail due to manufacturing defects. Things like bearings tend to fail quickly, or last years. Just because it's new, don't check it off the list of suspects yet - although I would test everything easy to get to first, personally!

Checked all your props for play in the UJ's and in themselves? Was the any play in the gearbox input shaft when you had it out?

Ok it’s fixed

After speaking to a few people it’s was asked a few times have I checked the ujs was aligned.

Something I kept overlooking, any how’s front was one spline out and rear was 1/4 out roughly

Sorted these and applied some grease and she rides lovely now happy days so I can keep cracking on

Why didn't we think of that?

Good job you fixed it instead of trying to ignore it, out of phase UJ's are a great way to break things!
