1.6 8v timing

Post by dan00001 » Wed Nov 01, 2017 5:01 pm

I've got my 1.6 8v in my sj, I've been driving it around for a couple of days now, I have setup the timing by ear and she's running okay, but I've just tried setting the timing with a timing light and at 8° she's almost ready to cut out (assuming the 1.6 8v is 8°??) Where I have her set by ear, the timing on the front cover & flywheel are reading way, way out, like around 40°.

Why?

Are you setting the timing with the vac advance unhooked and plugged?

I run mine at 10*btdc, I think most of us with the 8v do.

What carb are you running?

No I didn't, the vacuum advance wasn't working on the 1.3 so I never bothered, not even sure it's plumbed up right on the su hif44.

Anyway, I forgot to block the vacuum advance :S

Sorry to dig up an old post !

But do you plug the vacuum from the carb whilst setting the timing

No mention of it in the manual I dropped the revs down
And set the timing at 10

You need to block off the vac advance from the distributor when setting the timing.
