SJ 410 Engine, Help Please

Post by border » Sun Nov 08, 2020 5:03 pm

Just about got this thing ready , but still not convinced Engine is Right, Chucking a lot of smoke out , worse when using revs, also after about 5 minuets
after starting I get this bloody high pitched sound, seems like its coming from fan belt, have loosened and tightened but still the same.
Any thoughts or Advice appreciated, Thanks Kevin

Sounds like alternator bearings. You could try slackening off the tension completely so it would not drive the alternator and see if the squeal disappears.
Smoking exhaust? how long has the vehicle been standing before it came to you, could be sticking piston rings. How many miles has it done?

Not sure how long it stood before we got it, it has 56000 miles. Is there a way to fix sticking piston rings ?
Wil try that tomorrow. Thanks.

I presume that the SJ had been running for a little while before you took the video, the smoke looks whiteish which could be condensation in the exhaust before the whole system is heated through.

If it is burning oil you should probably compression test each cylinder to see if you have a low reading on any cylinders or a big difference on any.

Was running for about 10 minutes or so, how long should it take for condensation to clear ?

At idle on a damp day it might never clear - even at higher rpm whilst driving it might take quite a while in the winter.

I don't know if you did manage to isolate this noise - it does sound a bit bearing related - as Lundigee posted.

I would probably remove belt and see what the alternator bearings 'feel' like,if they are worn they may feel 'rough' or there might be play on the shaft, sometimes a fast spin by hand can be useful. Many years ago I had a water pump which got very noisy from worn bearings, might be worth having a look/feel of the water pump bearings as well if easy enough access.
If still not sure a stethoscope can be used to pinpoint noise but obviously you have to be careful not to have any loose clothing/scarf/tie/fingers dangling anywhere near rotating parts with engine running.
