Free wheeling hub does not appear to work.

Post by Ian Johnson » Fri Oct 10, 2014 5:38 pm

I have an S Reg Vitara I am having problems with. When I move the manually operated free wheeling hubs from Free to Lock. The passenger side operates as it should. The drivers side does not. I hear a clicking noise coming from the hub and it will not lock the hub. I have removed the original free wheeling hubs and replaced them with new free wheeling hubs and I am still having the same problem on the drivers side. Can anyone suggest what the problem is.

Any help you can give will be gratefully appreciated.

I would suspect that the splines on the end of the halfshaft are shot.

Take the fwh off and take a photo of the splines, maybe donkeychomp or one of the other Vit fellas will be able to tell you if that's the problem.

Are they the all black hubs with 'Made in US' cast into them? if so then there is a plastic cam inside them that often breaks.

Thank you Anton.
I will have a look at the splines on the half shaft to see if they are worn.

Thank you Rhinoman.

I will have a look to see if made in the USA is cast into the casing. I believe the hubs are original Suzuki Type A manual hubs.
