Probably post updates as i tidy it up Luke.

Haven't seen it since i bought it, just been sat in the yard at work since it got delivered.

Pretty sure the 601 will still respond well to some kind of a device that shoves air forcefully down its throat...

If you are that way inclined...

My brother in law had a Merc based camper with a 601 in it and the research I did says that 120hp/200lbft is possible with standard pump and injectors.

Not an expert by any means though, so feel free to ignore me!

Not gonna mess with it. Bought it as a work horse. Went for that merc in particular as it's slow, gutless but reliable and old enough to be basic enough i still know what i'm doing. With the exception i've never done more than an oil and filter change on a diesel before.

These engines power old taxis and trucks all over the world, and many of them are still going after 2 million miles. Pretty much just oil and filter changes and a new set of glow plugs every couple of hundred thousand miles.

In fact I believe that an Indian truck company bought the design and most of India's military trucks (that aren't Maruti's) are powered by some variety of this engine. Pretty sure they're still building them over there.

So it's been sat in the yard for 8 weeks unloved and ignored.

Finally got round to doing looking at it yesterday.

- one flat flat tyre (knackered valve)
- one softish tyre (not too concerned)
- cleaned the thick of the 20yrs of grime off the dash board and floor
- ordered wiper blades, replacement indicator and wing mirror

The most amazing thing, turned the key and it fired straight up. I thought it would at least need a jump start.

Should be serviced and on the road for 1st October.
