What type / make SAE 80/90 gear oil should I get ? price from Halfords is £9.99 per ltr, from elsewhere there only quoting £16.30 for 5lts !!!!!!!! that's from Jim Barrow, I assume that's ok is it.

Yes that's what I thought, but that's a rip at 10quid a ltr ! europarts quote £23.00 for 5 ltrs and Jim Barrow have just quoted £16.80 for 5ltrs. Its for the new diff etc that's just been fitted to the Sammy.

Scottie,
I see on the spec on the site it says GL4 for the gearbox, does it matter if its done with GL5 ?

Should be on the road soon !

Wilkos used to stock comma 75/90 gl4
For 3.50 at ltr. So if you have a local one pop in.

Its cheaper for a big 5 ltr from other places but remember to have something to put the oil into to pump it into the t case. Like a big syringe.

The GL- is the compression level.

The GL usually also defines the additives.

GL-5 (unless otherwise stated) has additives that will bind to and remove material off yellow metals that are subject to friction, some people claim that it's ok to use in the sj gearbox with brass synchros......yet it's strange that there are so many sj gearboxes out there that shift badly ;)

Personally I will only use GL4 in the gearbox.

Blergh, I bought some el cheapo stuff online, GL5 75/90 for the diffs, that stuff leaks like a bitch!

MotorFactors have always worked out well for me, or the Comma stuff.

Oil is so confusing, I replaced the oil in the diffs, transfer case & gearbox with triple QX 75w90, have just checked and it's GL-5.

Should I replace the oil with GL-4 ASAP?

I believe that the Suzuki guidelines say that GL5 is ok for the gearbox. I might be wrong. Having said that, I think that I would rather waste a couple of quid on oil than have to replace the gearbox, so I personally would change it to GL4.

I used this stuff from eBay, £25 inc 48 hour delivery, the blurb notes:

'This is a GL-4 and GL-5 Specification synthetic gear oil meaning it is safe for use where yellow metals are present.
It contains a buffered sulphur EP additive which helps protect yellow metals found in some gear boxes'.
