Yep! I'm well chuffed!

And now unchuffed. The tbox bolts carried on undoing themselves. Been under the truck now so many times I've lost count but the problem has been found. One of the threads in the box is now no longer a thread. So I've ordered a helicoil kit and I'll insert a new one.

And the 'new' starter motor packed up and got replaced. So far so good at least on that front.

Got the helicoil kit but that is just part of the problem. Scottie mentioned an engine mount might be buggered and I think he's right. Getting so many vibrations through the drive train so tomorrow is a long day...change mount. Drop t box and helicoil new thread. Fit front brake pads (new torque wrench turned up, old one knackered). Rear brake shoes. One rear brake cylinder and torque up a loose front wheel hub...

Cancel all that. Another rib broken so tomorrow she's booked in to get the mount and t box sorted out. Can't afford to get everything else done as well.

This is getting silly. £300 lighter the tbox was removed and new helicoils fitted. Engine mount replaced. The mechanic kept on saying my LJ is a bodge job and a death trap and anything over 35mph is suicidal. Kept on about crush collars too (he is a fekkin Land Rover specialist). I was puzzled until I drove her home. WTF. Okay, the tbox is now secure but in 3rd 4th and 5th the noise coming from the drive train when I back off the throttle is insane. Sounds like something is going to explode under there. I slacked off the tbox mounts as he had tightened them so much the rubbers were almost flat. That helped a bit but something is very wrong under there. He also said he filled the gearbox oil. Why? I didn't ask him too and I suspect he drained it but didn't fill it back as the bolt to top the oil up is pretty much seized solid. Will investigate further tomorrow.

The crush collars are used in the front and rear diff. They are used to preload the pinion bearings. If the diff has taken a clout on the on the propshaft flange (Oooh Flange) It may well of effected the preload, This would give alot of noise on deceleration due to the amount of backlash (slack) in the diff.
It could quite possibly cause drive train vibration aswell.

Other things to note, As this has been lifted, and i assume fitted with a shortened vitara axle. Has the axle been rotated so the diff pinion flange faces the transfer box? If so the the diff oil level will need to be higher or the pinion bearings will be starved of oil and fail giving the same symptons as above.

If the diffs have been pointed to the tbox I would suggest sorting that first as it would cause phasing which would definitely vibrate.

I would have to disagree with you on that. I have done it more than once without any problems. But each to there own.

Can't argue with physics :brows:
