Dan 2k's New Project. Mk1 VW Caddy

Post by dan_2k_uk » Thu Jul 07, 2016 9:29 pm

.

So. I've wanted one of these for longer than I can remember.

I've been looking for a little while and finally found a good enough one to commit to a purchase.

I've gone half's on it with a friend, who has also wanted one for years, to keep the cost down.

The rear load rack has already been removed.

Initial plans are to tidy it up a bit, Lower it on some decent wheels/tyres, and fit some creature comforts.

In the long term it will probably end up with an engine swap and totally sort the body but it's solid enough to not need the body work for a good few years yet.

Only got 72,000 on the clock. It was owned for most of its life by an old chap who just used it to run to the garden centre and pick up plants and stuff. There's a receipt for the cam belt change in 1998 at 60,000 miles which gives an idea how little it's been used!

I will try keep this thread updated if there is any interest?

Good point, its law Dan that it must have so much camber no more than half the tread touchs the road and it wears tyre shoulders down in weeks.

The tyres must also be 2 sizes too narrow for the rims.

Ha ha.

It will be lowered but the wheels/tyres will be fitted in the conventional format.

Got a few bits done.

Spent a long time wheel shopping. Theres a bit of compromise with a joint owned vehicle or a lot of waiting for something both are happy with. Took a while but we finally have wheels. Got the front lowered and the rear axle is off for "flipping" as they call it in the Caddy world. (It's just making it SPUA. 10cm drop)

Photos speak a thousand words.

Then rear axle out

Got the new saddles and brake compensator bracket welded on and did a bit of home sandblasting.

If anyone from the outside world is viewing after you drill the 15mm through hole a 16mm bolt turned down to 15mm is a great alignment tool and also has enough thread left to use it to clamp the saddle whilst welding.

Now it's sat in red oxide primer waiting for a top coat of black tomorrow and refit.

Really excited to see how she's going to sit. Hopefully won't be too low or it will be a case of fitting slightly longer shackles to fine tune the ride height.
