Looking for a 2007-2009 Grand Vitara, need advice

Post by JoePGM » Thu Feb 09, 2017 2:15 pm

Hello there,

I'm new to this forum. These day I'm looking forward to a 2007-2009 made Grand Vitara. Could someone give me certain advice? I'm mostly an urban and countryside driver, not a hardcore off-road cowboy at the moment.

1. Diesel and Petrol engine, which one have a more durable and solid performance? In personal, I prefer diesel engine which are general solid and durable. However I see there some post saying the Renault-built Diesel engine get certain issue due to the particulate filter. Any comments?

2. I'm looking forward for a 3dr version since mostly no passenger on my ride. Any good with 5dr?

3. Any good mechanics for regular maintenance and pre-purchase inspection? I'm based in south London, Croydon area.

4. Any precaution when checking the car on visit?

Thank you!

Joe

Hi, I have the 2.4 petrol that does 31 / 32 mpg average. Petrol engine is good. I read the 1.9 Diesel unit was a Renault offering and seemed to have a poor reputation for reliability and was a bit awkward to service yourself. I like the 5dr as more space, also if you are doing short trips in built up area without a good long blast the diesel will not thank you. Horses for courses.

Oh yes, in terms of buying - get a low mileage top spec one. Make sure it has a service history too. Take it for a good test drive and see if it is smooth.

Test everything electrical to make sure it works. Look for any oil leaks - don't think there are any major points to look out for. I notice you can get 3 dr 2.4 petrol variants. I'd search out a low mileage example in top spec. I also tend to check the tyres - have they been replaced with a premium brand or if they are budget brand the owner might have skimped on other stuff like oil changes.
