funny noise clutch??

Post by AshR1 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 11:46 am

When idling its got a funny noise, sounds like a heater blowing like a humming until I put pressure on clutch, then when in gear and going along it sounds like chchchchchch as if you're trying to do a train impression and that's only when I'm on the accelerator as soon as I come off the noise stops, and don't know if its related but I've found it hard to get into second lately when I first set off on a trip. Its a long shot but any body have any advice, could the clutch cable tension need adjusting as I'm clueless to this?

Thanks

Ash

And the chchch noise seems to be coming from exactly under the gearstick?

Sounds like it could be two different things to me.

One clutch/release bearing related and the other a UJ possibly?

Remove the gearbox to transfer box prop and check the UJs, you don'y want one of those letting go while you are driving as the results can be expensive.

I don't have the know how to start taking it apart lol is there anything I can look for from a novice point of view I've gone underneath and given the prop a wiggle and there's little if not no movement on it ?

Post by AshR1 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 3:00 pm

here's a video of the noise i was on about in my other post, this is in fifth gear and coming from right under gearstick, have another video uploading in lower gears, seems to be worst in third.

That sounds like it could be either a bad UJ or worse case scenario a loose flywheel.

If you can't investigate yourself I would get it to a garage asap.

Or maybe there's a member nearby who would be willing to help out and teach you how to fix it. Nothing is that hard to do on an SJ.

i asked the local guy to me who all the sj people near me go to and he said could be transfer box? and he's welding me on some new arches soon so when i go there i'll get him to have a look also im going to speak to a mechanic i know later to see his opinion, as i change into 3rd its got quite a bad grinding sound to it as i let off the clutch and through the higher end of the revs, i am uploading another vid to youtube to show it through the gears but it takes forever to upload lol

I would really stop driving it until you find the cause of the noise. Otherwise there's going to be more damage caused.

Humming noise, thrust bearing if it stops when you put your foot down on the clutch. Other noise, could be the UJ but with that amount of noise you should have been able to see it nearly hanging off. I have never had a flywheel come loose and I don't fancy having several pounds of steel flying about if it is that and comes off the bolts. And no, adjusting the clutch is not about to solve your problems.
I listened to the Utube film. And I think the advice given by Scottie is what you should consider. To sort the thrust bearing, means the engine/ gearbox out, same for flywheel and any clutch work. Just from the film sounds , perhaps your gearbox is about to go terminal. Again it's an out of the SJ job.

Not a good start for the new year but don't keep driving because the year could get much worse. Hope you get it sorted
