Re: Deafening transmission noise
What kinda noise? I thought my UJ was fucked until I actually put my head under mine and found about 12mm of play on both rear wheel bearings

Re: Deafening transmission noise
Its not high pitched bit of whiney noise but more of a loud grumble that seems to come from the whole drive train. I just trying to compare it to a standard sj on mud terrains on a normal road. If u get what I mean lol
Re: Deafening transmission noise
Hi,
I have a very similar noise on my SJ413, I noticed a week ago that the normally noisy interior (no carpets, sound proofing or frills) had got worse although it still drives well. Local garage believe that a bearing is collapsing or has collapsed in the rear differential. They have asked me to source a scrapped rear diff or axle - quite a tall order as it turns out. The replacement must be a 413. It would seem rebuilding the bearing maybe an easier option.
Anyone know were I can get the bearings and oem numbers or does anyone have a spare rear dif for sale?
many thanks

Re: Deafening transmission noise
The pinion bearings are available from normal bearing shops pretty cheaply the side bearings are a little more expensive but its likely it will only be the pinion bearing that has failed. The pinion seal and crush sleeve would have to be sourced from Suzuki as the seal has an extra lip that won't be present on a standard seal the same size.

The bearing info can be found part way through this axle sticky.

Re: Deafening transmission noise
If you are diagnosing issues with the transmission, I sometimes find it easier to put the back axle on axle stands, remove the front prop (because im paranoid) and the rear wheels, then put it in 2WD, 5th gear with the engine running and slowly release the clutch...
Everything will start spinning and it makes it easy to hear where its coming from... just watch out you dont get anything caught it something spinning!
