should i rebuild engine or sell?
should i rebuild engine or sell?
Well sadly my sj410 after much tinkering with the aisan carb and failed MOTs and denial, i had a compression test done
, the exhaust finally started spewing out sooty fuel and smelled rich in petrol while driving, and apparently only two cylinders are firing.
A guy here in Dorset quoted me a rebuild for about 1500 plus parts, which he estimates to be an additional 200-300 quid.
The car is solid condition, no rust inside or outside, just a bit on chasis underneath. Every part is original maruti and no mods.
Any thoughts if that rebuild is fair quote?

Re: should i rebuild engine or sell?
As robbie said just chuck another engine in, can pick one up anywhere from £50-£250 but if you can, try and find one still fitted so you can hear it running.
From the issues you described it might not even need a full rebuild. If only two are firing check your HT leads, dizzy, plugs etc. If it has low compression get the cylinder head gasket changed, not the most complex thing in the world with a semi decent tool kit.

£1500 is extortion!
Buy another engine or have a go yourself.
What were the compression test results?
As said none of it it rocket science, very simple motors to work on. Parts are still readily available and fairly cheap.

Re: should i rebuild engine or sell?
Im in Bournemouth , Robbie.
Yeah its steep and unfortunately I'd love to have a go at it but don't have a place to work on it and can't find a garage that would
take it on.
Im totally dumbfounded, who wouldn't want to work on such a neat car
need like an auto apprentice academy to take it on in this area it appears..
Re: should i rebuild engine or sell?
What's the mileage on the engine?
A complete rebuild sounds a bit drastic.
Did the car use oil alot before.
What's the hstory of the engine? Previous repairs etc etc

Re: should i rebuild engine or sell?
I’m not competent enough to do a rebuild, but if you got a engine and could get it to Swanage I can swap it

Definitely do an engine swap, there are loads of 1.0L engines kicking about I should think.
