Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
HI Guys
Wow, thanx for for the warm welcome
We were very lucky to get hold of our SJ, we bought her from the Suzuki dealers themselves , they had her for 1 year and the original owner had her for 26 years. there is virtually no rust to speak of with 216000km on the clock, helps living in a desert country
The downside is high temperatures ie. possible overheating
We have been prepping her for her first trip.
- New oil all round, oil filter, air filter, petrol filter, spark plugs, dist cap, leaf spring bushes, thermostat, temp sensor, radiator service, new timing belt and t/b tensioner, new fan belt, new tires all round and installing a rev counter.
"Zuki" as she is known, is still in original condition, no mods.
We plan to do a few mods as we go along:
- Rooftop tent - made by Magiolina
- Fridge - National Luna
- Double battery system to run the fridge.
- Extra petrol tank.
- Water tank.
The first major change we want to make is a 5spd gearbox, we are looking for a SJ410 5sp Santana gearbox, fits directly onto the SJ without adapter plates/mods. Only problem is finding one, been looking all over the internet, no luck
Here is a question for you:
I wanted to broaden the stance, but i am not to fond of wheel spacers, then i had the crazy idea of getting SJ413 axel's and steering setup, from what i have read/researched this should work without to much fuss, giving a little broader stance.
Any advice/suggestions?
Thanx again for the warm welcome, its nice to feel part of a group that really appreciates the worlds best 4x4 ever
We are going on a trip on the 26th Aug, to the Ugab river, near the Brandberg, here are the GPS co-ordinates if you guys want to check it out on Google Earth.
20°59'18.92"S
14°30'42.68"E
We will post some photos when we get back.

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
Correct me if I'm wrong guys but I think the SJ413 has the same size axles. You would want Samurai axles, which are wider.
Pretty much will give you the same extra width as spacers
The thing is the spring mounts are in different places on the axles (further apart) so you would probably need to cut the spring plates off and move them on the axle casing.
scottiej's done that

Look forward to the pictures, sounds like a good trip
As for swapping the axles you will need axles of a samurai not an early 413 as the early 413 axles are the same width as 413 ones.
All you need to do to fit samurai axles is to move the spring perches to match the spring spacing of the 410, samurai springs are mounted slightly further outboard. as long as you have the steering links that come with the axles the steering bolts straight up to your original pitman arm.
Then we get to the diff ratios, 410 are 4.11:1 and the diffs are smaller than 413/samurai diffs so you cannot swap them into the samurai axles. The closest standard ratio diffs are out of an early 413 with 3.93:1, this will lower your rpms at higher speeds, improve top speed but loose a bit of acceleration, but as long as you are not running large tyres it shouldn't really cause any issues. you might even be fine with the standard samurai diffs that are 3.73:1.
There is lots of info on suzuki axles and what you can swap between them here clicky

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
Sorry, my mistake, meant Samurai axels, if the width increase is not that much, would you rather suggest spacers?
Wont this put more strain on the wheel bearings? We currently have 215/70/15 Yokahama Geolander tyres on.
Does anyone know where i can get hold of a Santana 5spd gearbox i think around mid to late 80's fits directly to the 410 engine?

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
I have 30mm spacers on mine with 235x80r15 tyres and my wheel bearings are still working ok
Spacers would be considerately cheaper and easier though...
I'd imagine you'd have to import a gearbox from the UK... I don't have a 410 5 speed box though :(

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
unless you run 2" spacers on each wheel then samurai axles will be wider. Samurai axles are 4" wider than 410 axles.
2" spacers will put extra strain on your wheel bearings so IMO samurai axles might be a lot more effort but are the better option, they also have stronger front shafts and CVs as Twiss says 30mm spacers will be fine with small tyres though, all depends how much wider you want to go really.
You can quite often find santana 5speed boxes second hand on ebay, however I think your main problem will be getting one shipped to you unless you can find one in Africa
I've got a few 410 gearboxes at home, I think they are all 4 speed, but i will check.

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
I wonder what they would do in the Post Office if you wandered in with a gearbox and asked for a quote to ship to namibia hmmmmm!
My mates have got a couple of spare 410s so I'll see if they have any 5 speed boxes. Pretty sure they would be OK to ship it to you, as long as you pay the postage lol

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
I was a bit bored so got a quote through royal mail, I have no idea how much a gear box weighs but 10Kg's to Namibia would cost from £115 and take 49 days or £188.30 and take 5 days

An sj gearbox probably weighs more like 20kg.lazy rambler wrote:I was a bit bored so got a quote through royal mail, I have no idea how much a gear box weighs but 10Kg's to Namibia would cost from £115 and take 49 days or £188.30 and take 5 days

Re: New to Suzuki Club UK
Hi Guys
Sorry i haven't responded till now, i have been working the whole weekend, bit busy having two businesses and all.
That sounds great, we would really appreciate it if you guys could help us find a 5spd gearbox for our 410, postage wont be a problem, we would just be very greatfull to find a 5spd.
Another question, as far as i know, the 5spd gearbox is longer then the 4spd, i assume the prop shaft going to the transfer case is shorter? the mountings are prob also different as well as the position of the gear shift?
I spoke to the wife, we will prob be going the Samurai axle conversion route, it might be a bit more work, but a better option in the end.
Cheers
