su carb problem

Post by ianedwards » Thu Sep 15, 2011 8:33 pm

hi, ive just bought a suzuki sj413 kja with a vitara 1.6 with a su carb, well thats what i think it is, looks like one.

any way, the guy i bought it off couldn't get it to fit so cut a hole in the bonnet for it to stick out of. just wondering what options i have to put it right. as ive never delt with carbs before, does it have to be as close to the manifold as possible? or can i move it a bit further away and down an few inches, or can i alter the pipe work down so its on an angle? or does it have to be upright.

any ideas or experiance with this problem would be great.

cheers

ian

I'm in the same predicament as you. I fitted a su carb at the weekend and now my bonnet wont fully close  . I was just going to get some sort of bonnet vent and stick it over the hole  .

there are conversions out there which mount differently (they don't have the bend bolted on but have the su flange where the original carb should be) the problem is the standard carb is downdraft wheras the su is side draft, have a word with rockwatt on this forum hes a good fabricator and has done a number, your bonnet will defiantly close if you get one of the modified manifolds, also you won't get the other associated problems with the adapter like carb icing in cold weather (its a common problem)

I know what I'd do if I wasn't going to get a custom manifold. Weld on a pair of symmetrical 'power bulges' on the bonnet; like on a Rover P6 V8.

This picture shows them fairly well:

Obviously they'd need to be a bit bigger to cover your carburettor, but it's an option.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

ok cool, does any one know if a 1.3 manifold is the same as the 1.6, ive seen one altered so it bolts straight on the side as you say,

it looks the same, but would like to know for sure before i bought it.

The 1.6 manifold has larger ports I think... but you can put whichever one on you want...

I've got a 1.3 Samurai manifold modded to take the SU. On my 1.6 8v vit engine.

Works perfectly...

To you guys with the bonnet closing problems, I would strongly advise scrapping the adapters and getting a modded manifold from either RockWatt or Rhino Ray! Worth every penny! No more clearance or icing issues

Sorry about the messy engine bay :P
