Steering info ?

Post by Crisdolf » Tue Oct 30, 2012 11:47 am

On my 1983 sj410 all standard engine, would I be right in thinking it wouldn't have power steering ? Can't see any box on engine ,but the steering is really light (to light I'd say) is this the norm ?

Are there any hoses attached to the steering box?

If not you haven't got it. If there are and they go to a pump mounted on the engine, you have.

I always imagine something without power steering to be a little heavy on the steering ?

The steering box is geared low to help off road, its a recirculating ball type steering box

Which is pretty reliable but you don't get much 'feel' back through it, but its perfectly suited to SJ's

Unless you've got huge tyres or the vehicle weighs 2 tons you're not allowed power steering. It's banned.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

In fairness, you need big tyres to justify power steering in an SJ. Im not a big offroader, but I've never felt like I've needed it!
