Bell housing crud shield

I'm fairly sure there should be a seal on the plate?

There wasn't one on when i took off and there isn't one on now. Just thinking if there should be one i'll sort it when i fit the 1.6, silicone sealer???

yea, ive never had one on mine and ive used it off road aswell. some people say i must have one, others say it doesn't matter. so i just agreed with the lazy people so i don't have to do any work on it...

normally a bit of black goo on there. I just smeared a bit of silicon round it when I put mine back on.

cant imagine it really matters that much when the whole thing is going to be immersed in shite anyway

I just bolt it on to keep stones and stuff out, no sealant as water will find its way in anyway so might as make it easier for it to get back out.

I had no end of trouble on the racer with dirty water getting into the bell housing, drying out and leaving mud in the clutch cover, Eventually this would fill the cover to the extent that it would not grip. I got peed of with cleaning this out every event so I made a better crud shield from some ally plate and fully sealed it with silicone. I also found that crud could get in around the starter motor
so this needed sealing as well.
If you leave it open you will need to clean it out, running a hose through the timing hole does work except when the crud has dried like concrete.

I think i'm gonna go with easy in easy out. I'll give it all a wash when i put the 1600 in. Clutch is only 3month old so same one is going back in.

As tim says, just got to remember to rinse it out whilst it's soft.
