I picked up my first SJ413 last weekend. From what i have seen of it so far, it doesn't look too scary regardng rust. The Rear wheel arches seem to be the worst areas and then there are just a few spots of rust around some of the seams, but nothing major. I did pick up on a thread which said to check underneath the battery box, and this appears to be really sound.
I"m sure there will issues i need peoples help with, like sourcing parts, but will spend some time reviewing all the threads first.

My advice is pounce on those arches now. I thought mine weren't too bad but two months out of the garage and suddenly it became obvious how the previous owner had dressed her up for sale and now she's looking like a rot box.

nice looking motor that is good condition compared to mine when i picked it up it had loads of holes and rust and the previos owner filled the holes with silicon and painted every bit or rust with red oxide stuff and then sold it to me a year later and he said the rust dindnt get any werse

Where would be the best place to get panels from. For the rear wheel arches, can you just buy the edge of the wheel arch and then cut out the rusty piece and weld in the new instead of changing it all?

I am hoping to keep this 413 really original to look at, but what other upgrades would people recommend. I see that a lot of people have trouble with the carbs, but is this due to the steep entry and exit angles you guys put your cars through?

you can buy replacement ones but not sure where and i think they are quite exspensive

I'm sure someone will be along shortly who knows about the arches. You can certainly get the inners somewhere.
As mine is used and abused my arches original arches are long gone but that ones a bit nice to chop up.
