Re: Alternative starter for sj 1.6 conversion
getting annoying now its the only thing holding me up on this conversion
Re: Alternative starter for sj 1.6 conversion
Im at this point with mine, was on it till 9 last night and made no progress today!
The one that came with the engine is a bosch one and fits, it has 8 teeth (but its dead)
The spare one i have has a mitsubishi logo on the back, its abit fat but has 9 teeth?
My standard 410 starter has a mitsubishi logo on the back a 8 teeth (possibly a skinny type)
The lucas one i got sent for a g16a engine today is to fat and holes dont quite line up, also 8 teeth
Anyone know if i can use the standard 410 starter with 8 teeth on a 413 flywheel and 1.6 engine?

Grind the block to fit the fat starter is always an option.
Is it just the solenoid on the dead one? Swap solenoids over?

Update
Ive put in my old fat one (with 9 teeth) turned the engine over and loads of grinding noise.
Removed the starter to see some metal filings so i guess 9 tooth starter motors dont line up.
HOWEVER i have found a motor factor who sell a brand new unit (not recon) which is the skinny type with 8 teeth and even the bolt holes line up perfectly!! £65
Ive put this in and she turns over a treat!! (still doesnt run) but atleast turns over lol.
If anyone is interested i will put up the make and model etc and where to get it from

We're did you get it from? That is the only thing that's stopping me use mine at the moment
Re: Alternative starter for sj 1.6 conversion
Just to confirm, the starter Valeo D6RA12 is compatible with the starter on my 1992 Suzuki Samurai (Spanish Built) with a 1324 cc engine. My starter solenoid is failing and I need to change it but a new cheap starter seems the way to go for future reliability. Thanks for all the info very helpful, if I bought a solenoid from Tracks of Exeter it would not come as cheap as the new starter I'm sure. cheers.

Re: Alternative starter for sj 1.6 conversion
personally, if you are still using a 1.3 engine, there isn't really any need to use the valeo starter motor, or even a suzuki/mitsubishi skinny starter, you might as well just use a regular starter
the only reason we use skinny starter motors for ours it because the 1.6 engine and 1.3 gearbox aren't quite the right shape for each other, and a standard starter will foul on the engine casing

You can get brand new standard starters for £80
http://www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=STR71031
or replacement solenoids for £16
http://www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=SND1803
but it is advisable to call them and give them your starter's part code to make sure its the right one!
