Re: newbie
On stock internals they'll handle it if you drive with your head and not a lead foot, the weakest parts are the CVs however these only really fail from shock loading/bouncing under full throttle etc.lesward wrote:nice work im thinking 33,s on sj like special trac,s will sj axles handle real aggressive pattern?
If however you upgrade to full float rear (£250ish) and chromo CVs and shafts (£300ish) they will handle a lot more abuse.
Sj axles are surprisingly strong, the rear shafts are actually close to the same diameter as rangerover shafts and as the diffs are 4pin units they are pretty damn strong for there size, in the 7/8 years I've had my SJ I have never blown up a diff, just suffered from a few pinion bearing issues but that's usually down to the fact the diffs are 20+ years old and I've never ran smaller than 31x11.50 tyres. Only seems to be the guys who just drive with their foots to the floor all the time that break Sj axles on a regular basis, don't get me wrong I don't always drive gently, however I also know when to back off the loud pedal
I think the only time I personally would swap to hilux axles would be if I was going to build a full on comp truck with 37" tyres with close to 200bhp.
