I'm going to sound silly here, but what about a 300TDi/TD5 Landie Diesel? Are they too big? Or will they tear the diffs and transfer box apart?

Too big, to heavy.

The best suzuki quality is its weight... try and keep it low ;)

As D86 said, the 1.7 Cav (think the astra engines are the same) engines are so unbelivebly underpowered and slow!

I drove my mates and was surprised how slow and underpowered it was considering the weight of the lump! Yes it has low down torque but is all that effort worth it??

I was going to go derv, ive seen loads of conversions.... and after pricing them up, time, effort and down time... i stuck another vit engine in it!

Yes but need hydraulic clutch setup and a spacer for the hydraulic bearing, you can get a carlton r25 box but will need the clutch fork modifying to extend the bearings reach. More hassle than it's worth, 1.6 with su carb is what I'd do next time.
