Suzuki help please...

Post by Dipper355 » Tue Aug 12, 2014 4:54 pm

Hi all,

New to the forum and hoping some of you Suzuki experts out there might be able to help me.

I run a 1950s car which I use in classic trials (basically organised/tame greenlaning.)

Having rebuilt the car a few years back, I fitted a back axle from a mid-80s Supercarry (as I had a few lying around). The axle was the right width, had a helpful ratio of 5:1 and appeared to tick all the boxes.

However having competed for a few years I have broken the pins in two of my three diffs which has resulted in withdrawal from the events and knackered diffs, so clearly there is an area of weakness.

So I'm now looking at the options to change/replace the inners of the diff - primarily to move to a four star 4x4 diff rather than the weaker van option I currently run. Having done much digging around the web it looks like the inners from a LJ50/LJ80 or SJ410 may fit in the supercarry casing, but has lead me to have several questions:

1) Am I correct in saying these diffs are compatible?
2) If so, are there any breakers or garages that specialise in old Suzuki parts?
3) Or, alternatively does anyone have any old axles/diffs kicking around they are looking to offload?

Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help get the car back on the hills!

Hi,

I am not sure how similar the Supercarry and 410 axle casings are, but im pretty sure the ratio is not 5:1 in a 410.
The 410 diff is about 4.1:1 I think
If the axles are in any way similar, it might be worth upgrading to a 413 diff+axle as I believe they are a bit stronger than 410 ones.
But to get 5.12:1 ratio you would need to install the ring and pinion from a vitara front diff...

I don't know that much about 410s but Im sure scottiej will be along soon ;)

I recently sold some lj80 diffs to someone with a small 2wd trialler and I'm pretty sure he was also running a super carry axle.

I presume your diffs are 2 pin? 410 and lj80 diffs are 4 pin and strong little units, you might be able to swap the ring and pinion from your 5.1 diffs onto it.

If you can take some measurements, post some pics of your diffs then I'll be able to confirm for you.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I think the 413 axle is a bigger/different size to the earlier versions which might be problematic as I have an a-frame buolt around the current casing, which is why I'm looking at the options to replace the internals and not the external specs.

Yes the supercarry is 2 pin and hence seem to be struggling under stress on the sections!?

Ahh sounds like the LJ route might be the one to go for then, but looks like I am a bit late in sorting this if one of the competition has nabbed all the LJ80 diffs ;-)

I'll get the tape measure and camera out and post back.
