Hi folks
Currently, I have a 2006 (newshape) Mitsi L200 which I love. It's my daily driver, which has been offroad a number of times.
Unfortunately, it has to go in spring next year for a number of reasons. One stipulation from the other half is that I am allowed "one car" or "one car and a (cheap) toy".
Originally, I was going to keep the L200 and use that as both but it doesn't look as if that's realistic, plus I c**p my pants when I go offroad that I might break it. Hence the compromise; I go and get a relatively sensible car (I'm thinking Jaguar XF 3.0S sport brake with a towbar ) and an offroad toy that I can tow to events.
A number of the l200forum guys have had SJ410s and SJ413s so that seems like a decent direction. I'd be looking to buy a non-MOT version and tow it behind the wife-friendly car to the events and then thrash it.
Having perused the sage advice on here, I think that I'm edging toward the SJ410 because it's more likely that I can understand the mechanics involved there, compared to the fuel-injected 413s. It would never be on the road so fuel-consumption, etc, is not an issue.
So for pure off-road experience, plus modability, plus intermediate-level mechanics experience, what would you recommend?
Thanks
Scott

Most SJ413s are carb's as well. I think there were only a small number of injected SJs at the end of the production run compared to carb models. The injection system is pretty basic regardless, as it is single point. Imagine it as a carburettor but with an electronically adjusted mixture based on the throttle position, revs and how much unburnt fuel there is in the exhaust. I'm pretty sure the ignition timing is still points, though I could be wrong.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

H cant go wrong with an SJ, as ed said most 413 are carbed and they are easy to mod and work on
Sid James gone but never forgotten
Jimny 1.6 not as good as an SJ but still good
