Alot more work involved than what you think,when you take into account all the work involved i personally dont think you will gain much,not sure how you would stand on the insurance side of things either.

Hope it does work out for you of course but the 'rewards to effort' involved in my mind dont stack up,just my personal opinion of course.

I do know what you mean. However, I do like a challenge mainly to find the solution. Research has given me a layout and yes, it could be fitting a 2 litre or whatever would achieve the same result and a lot easier my thoughts are to show a junior someone (family) the value of engineering/how its made, whilst we attempt it, as opposed to go buy it press a button mentality that is so prominent these days. Also I need a bespoke vehicle for my work.

Instead of turbocharging the 1.6, have you thought about an engine swap to something with more power/torque right out of the box? A J20 2.0 litre might be a good swap. Might be...

I'm not sure which option would be more work, but the engine swap would probably be more insurance friendly. Probably...

Have you thought about a supercharger instead of a turbocharger?
I reckon its less work than using a turbo.... because its mostly just the bracket fabrication and a pulley/belt combo
Will probably work out easier than adapting the exhaust for turbo

Exhaust ah that must be the bit I'm missing on the Vit lol. A supercharger would be good if I had one ....... no lag under acceleration and also less heat problem and less problems with balancing any catalyser. I do take on board the 2.0 litre engine argument but again I don't have one.

For now I'm adopting the old skool idea of make it handle and stop before the go factor is modified..... I do like cutting myself shaving every morning as opposed to trimming roots of daisies

On the subject of handling and stopping... do some rear discs

Rear discs probably won't change any stopping power but they are much easier to maintain.

To be honest on my spanish sammy as soon as the drums start to go a bit wonky (after every pay and play!) you end up losing most of the brakes even if there's no leaks!
I would imagine that Jimnys have improved brakes though
