Yes, I also read that when they swapped the engine to the M series, they swapped the tiptop in 2001, but the soft top stayed G series until 2005, when the gearbox, transfer case and diffs changed too.

So there are G engined Jimnys, and 2 different M engined Jimnys. I *think* the 2001-2004 tintop has the Samurai ratios.

That's probably right. It sounds to be.

Why do you ask? What is stirring in that head of yours?

The soft tops with the G13BB are Spanish built, the tin tops with the M13A are Japanese built.

Just wondering, because I think that with a 410 t-case, a 1:1 ratio 5th (in the post-2005 jimny's) would not do for me. Still wondering which way I'd go if I ever got around to swapping out that engine for something with more guts, that's all.

I'm hoping to drive across europe in it in 2015 or 2016, and a 1:1 5th would mean revving the crap out of it to get 70. Sounds like a great way to keep the thing thirsty!

Anton,

As I said before I'm not sure what the box ratios are in mine. I have a 410 tranny box AND 5.125:1 Vitara diff gears. I'm now running 31's and it seems fast enough on the road.

My sons Samurai has a 1.6 Vitara fuel injected engine, we believe standard Samurai running gear and tyres around 29" diameter and it performs equally well.

What do we get for fuel economy? No Idea, but they're fun :D

If it wasn't for the european trip, I wouldn't be so worried, but I don't want to end up spending hundreds on fuel, 'tis all!

;)

You won't in europe anyway. the fuel is cheaper and the roads are less congested so you don't use as much fuel. I was amazed how much cheaper my sj was to run in France and my SJs fuel economy sucks! I'm lucky to get 20mpg

Dunno how long ago you went to France mate but when I was there last year fuel was about the same price as here!
Belgium was marginally more expensive and Holland was a bit more expensive again

Apparently Germany is about the same as here and Italy is quite a bit more expensive
Spain is a little bit cheaper but really to get cheap fuel nowadays you have to go further east than Germany/Italy

It was only a few pence cheaper but you do get more miles for your money as the roads are good and you aren't always stuck in traffic like the UK

Anyway we drive SJs who cares about fuel economy

I think anyone doing a 1,000 mile journey should be slightly concerned about fuel economy ;)
I'm hoping megasquirt will increase economy... but as its an SJ Im not getting my hopes up too much :)
