It depends what engine, standard UK suzukis never had the diesel option so if you do get one it will either be a conversion or an import, how mechanically competant (spelling?) are you? some diesel conversions are home brew specials with parts that have been modified to fit if these break you may have to manufacture a replacement

My Samurai is doing at a rough guess 17 smiles per gallon. All depends how much i flog it. Its just had a few adjustments so i'll try and work it out again at some point.

As tramp says many diesel conversions are one offs. Nothing wrong with most, just need that bit know how to rectify any problems. When buying any modified Zuk try and find out what all the bits are off so you know what you are looking for when it comes to spares.

At one point i had my SJ doing 35mpg with the daihatsu carb on. That was motorway running.

As for power all of mine still have the 1.3 lump in. Goes fine, i find it has enough power for off roading / pay n play. Never done much towing. Off road i would guess at garbage due to the additional weight.

On road mine is fine. Hauled a few small camping trailers about loaded with all kindsa crud. It pulled it ok, still got up to 60mph. If i were going weekend camping I wouldn't have an issue taking a trailer.

Off road the diesel is heavier than the standard engines, one of the real advantages of the suzuki offroad is its light weight, if the standard engine isn't powerful enough for you id advise the 1.6 vit 8v conversion as its only slightly heavier than the standard engine but has a healthy 20-30bhp increase in power

17mpg is bad.

I can do alot mechanically.

But i dont know alot about bhp or engine info but i can fix it, i can gas/mig/stick weld.
As long as i have the parts i can fix and fit.

Really i need approx 30mpg would it be possible to get that from a szuk? What engine would i need in it for that?

As long as it's relatively standard, tyre size wise etc and the engine is in good condition and set up well you should see around 28mpg driven sensibly maybe more if you are lucky.

It's when you start fitting bigger tyres with more offroad bias tread patterns that the fuel consumption starts to suffer.
