Thanks everyone, I've got some good news though; we'll be driving it back and keeping it :) it costs a mint to import cars over 10 years old into Mongolia so we're driving back through Russia, apparently it's a real direct route and only takes a week or so.

Electronic ignition is a great idea, I used to have a mk1 16v golf on twin 45 webers and when I changed that from points to electronic ignition it made a massive difference, plus no burnt out points as you say.

I've been contemplating a cheeky 1.6 8v swap since we're changing the gearbox anyway but you're only meant to use a one litre engine for the rally so maybe we'll just man up and enjoy our 45bhp!

My first SJ was a 410...like they say the engine is rock solid, I'd take the rocker box off and make sure the valve screws are loctited down though, they tend to rattle loose. Apart from that I think you're on a winner. Wish I was going with you!

What's your team name? Had a look at the website, only one Brit team and that was pretty vague.

We're called The Bearded Dragons at the moment, welsh thing coming through ;) but we're going to have to chance it as I've found out there's already a team of that name who went this year. The teams for next year won't be listed yet I don't think

Well whatever you are named I wish you good luck. Had a look at the route and it's pretty brutal! A few off road mods and I reckon you have a good chance. If there's just the two of you I suggest junking the rear seats for extra storage space and save a bit of weight too. Like you said a roll cage seems almost mandatory. Don't forget spare shocks etc. More than one spare wheel. Guess I'm stating the bloody obvious!

Snorkel but try and run a propper air filter not a K&N type as the sand will pass through them.
Decent set of 215 or possibly 235s (GT Radial Adventuro if you can get them in that size, or Insa Sahara, Kuhmo KL71s) all got tried and tested tread.
Carry a a good few fuel filters as once you leave europe its not quite so high quality fuel
Fan belt and cambelt. Fairly sure the 1.0 is not an interference engine so if the cam belt snaps it just needs re timing.
Usual bottles of stop leak too
If you have time a rear disc conversion may be an idea. Stops the drums clogging up and means you can use same pads all round.

Most importantly of all LOTS OF PHOTOS!
