Hey Guys!

been trying to crack on with the samurai project recently and come upon a little stumbling block, just wondered what you thought.

basically... the brake servo is massively in the way of my new carburettor setup. ive tried to think of many ways around this but ive come to the conclusion it has to go!

so my next move was to start looking at remote brake servos, I had the idea it would be easy enough to find some sort of kit that would just bolt straight in, but I didn't have as much luck as that.

but now im wondering how important is a brake servo? my old 410 never had a brake servo, the pedal was a bit stiffer but I always managed to stop it. the brake system on the samurai looks pretty much the same, not sure if it has a smaller master cylinder due to the servo? but how much difference would it make if I just drove it without a servo? would I need to change the master cylinder to a 410 one?

so now I just want to know your opinions really. has anyone here ever had experience fitting a remote servo, or has anyone else completely removed a servo for any reason?

I wouldn't take the servo off and run a 410 one personally

There are a few different types that are a) different in appearance and b) different distances away from the bulkhead

in my opinion the best ones are from late model samurais... about 1990 onwards

its not a very good picture of it but you can sort of see that its bolted right up against the bulkhead

ive had this problem a couple of times with jap SJs (i think) that have a tube shaped mount between the master cylinder and the bulkhead, and its caused problems doing the SU conversion

I believe they are both Jap, one is early one is late
Mine is a late spanish. Pretty sure the spanish ones are the square reservoir and jap are the round

That's my old (now gone) carb setup, but you can clearly see that my brake servo isn't a problem. It's not a problem for my new setup either:

I have a 1985 SJ50v (non samurai SJ413). I think if you swapped to the type of servo I have, you'd be laughing - talk to Andy, Mike, Scottie or any of the dozen other people who have *WAY* too many parts floating around, one of them is sure to have what you need, although I can't guarantee it'll just bolt right on. Probably does, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah the small Jap one fits on alright, the large Jap on is a bit tight i think, and the massive spanish one just doesn't fit whatsoever

From your pic, I have the "large" Jap type, and I have several inches to spare.

I'd still go for a "small" if I were swapping a Spanish one out, but I'd say either type seems to be fine. ;-)

I run the bulkhead mounted servo, this can be found on vitara's and some samurai's, loads slimmer but you need to move the heater valve.



I've often wondered if you can modify the servos with the spacer to remove the spacer, I bet it wouldn't be that hard, it should only be the push rod that is longer.

Mine seems like a pretty large servo,

It's Spanish and the servo is Lucas

Probably another classic Suzuki...
