New engine woes

Hi all,

You may have seen that I just joined the forum, and im in need of a little help.

I got this vitara from a friend after the engine blew. A new one was sourced but never fitted, and I have taken on the task. now I have found that the FQ engine in this model (1.9 DDIS) is used in many different makes and models, and I suspect this is the route of my problems.

So the engine fits on the gearbox, but fowls the front diff / drive systems with the sump, so I gathered that the sump was wrong, and I needed one for this application.

So off I went online and sourced what I hope / thought is the right one. Now from what I have seen, the sump is correct as there is a separate pickup area for the oil pump, but this sump is far too shallow, and hits the current oil pickup on the engine.

so my issue now.
- new sump too shallow
- There is an oil pickup in the new sump, but there is also and oil pickup on the engine block - I dont see how they are compatible
- There looks to be a hole and pipe for the oil dip stick on the new sump & one on the engine.

Im starting to think I have the wrong engine !!!

Can anyone advise.

So... Engine sitting on diff ...

But is on gearbox (but not on engine mounts)

Sump off, and oil pickup looks way too low ..

sump that was on doner engine

new sump

dip stick tube on block ..

so i guess there is a different oil pump setup that connects onto the one in this sump ?

I dont know - please help. This is vry annoying !!

Welcome to the club
I know sod all about this engine, but have extracted the lubrication section from the manual
in case there's anything in it that may help.

I think you may well be correct that the oil pick up pipe from the pump is different.

Doesn't the oil pick up pipe unbolt from the block?

You need to get a oil pick up pipe for the new simp as it will/might be of a different design.

I'm pretty sure the oil pick up pipe will unbolt easily as it does on any engine I've worked on.

Sourcing a oil pick up pipe for your new sump may be more difficult but give the breakers a call, or go there and unbolt one :P

Let us know how it goes mate

Thanks

Is this a commercial Vitara with the diesel engine or a standard one that someone has shoved a derv lump in it?

When I changed the engine in my SJ410, I went over to a Suzuki Swift GS engine.
I had to swap sumps with an SJ413 engine, and also had to swap oil strainer/pick up to fit into the new sump too.

Assuming you need to do something similar.

Thanks @Darrell - Thats a different diagram to the one's I have seen, and it looks like the setup that I need !

@chan I hope you are right, as this will be my next attack - unbolt the current one, and source this extended hose, which would be a stealer jobbie .

@donkeychomp this is a OEM vehicle as far as I know with what was thought to be an OEM replacement engine, but it looks to be for the wrong application !

@binge hope your right mate.

Thanks for your replies chaps. Atleast I have now not given up all hope that this is completely the wrong engine. Off to find the correct pickup line somewhere, somehow.

BTW, I had a quick look around the site ,and there are some pretty mean looking of road vehicles on here ! Congrats on building such beasts. They are something completely different to what I normally drive, but they look awesome fun !

So I went to "Wikipedia" and its fitted to

So I tried "f9q Mitsubishi"

Found a pdf file on the engine and it shows this

So it looks like you may need the dam oil pump as well as there only shown as one part.

Huummm, does look like a new unit needed.

Will have to see what the stealers says. Could be annoying.

Thanks for looking into that for me!

right guys. I'm back and I'm on this!

The freezing weather is over (hopefully), I have a new baby girl (so I've been on DIY mode) and both other cars (mines and the misses) are running. so its time to attack the vitara!

does anyone know much about this damn oil pump I need? I've been trawling the Web but can't find one. starting to think stealer only.

cheers peeps
