New Suzuki vitara owner, security worries

Good evening, I am picking up a 1998 vitara on Saturday. Locally a few older 4 x 4 vehicles have been stolen or suffered attempted thefts over the past 12 months. From googling around I assume the 98 Vit comes with a basic Suzuki fitted immobiliser. For a more visual deterrent to hopefully keep the scum bags at bay I am looking at a disklok, do any of you use or recommend them? What size would fit the steering wheel, small 35 - 38.9cm, medium 39 - 41cm, I assume the larger model would be to big?

Or what about a pedal lock, any thoughts on them? Sorry for all the questions but the vit will be my only method of transport in 2016 and I can not stand the prospect of having another vehicle stolen. Or any other simple / basic measures I can put in place to lessen the chance of becoming a victim of theft.

Thank You

Welcome to the club.

I have to experience with discloks but in reviews the proper version, not the cheap knock offs, are highly recommended.

Another very good option is the mul-t-lock. Locks the gear lever in neutral. Does require a base bolting to the floorpan though.

I like the ones that look like a baseball bat, they clip over your steering wheel. Theres one that clips around the gearstick and over the handbrake, these are pants as you can just pull the gear knob off!

I have one of the ones you fit on the gear leaver and handbrake, and they're worse than useless. It's just a visual deterrent, really. They're utterly useless, and in reality only serve to make my life more difficult, not to make the vehicle more secure.

A decent immobiliser and maybe a vehicle tracker is a better idea, and what I'm going to do eventually (right now the vehicle's best defence is that it looks like a pile of rubbish, so no-one bothers with it - but I do want to tidy it up eventually!).

I want to fit line-locks eventually too (instead of fiddle brakes) and if you hide the controls for those, they can be a good immobiliser too. Although they're technically illegal on a road car...

Yeah I have a disklok after some thieving young tea leafs tried to take my SJ, when they tried to take it I had the cheapest and nastiest crook lock fitted which they basically kicked off, disk locks are so much better. when I bought a vitara i bought a disklok to match and it was fine. after I sold the vit I put the disklok on my Clio, I've still got the lok but looking now, it doesn't say what size it is! So I can't be much help!

I dont know if your Vitara will have a immobilizer as standard, mines a 1998 and I can start it without the keys if I wanted too.

With past vitaras that I owned and used daily I had a proper disc lock for the steering wheel it was expensive but 90& of the time you can get em cheap at carboots, ebay etc.

The one I.got now is a.offroader and is in my garage so when not being used I got a big dvla wheel clamp and lock, battery disconnected and will have a quick release steering wheel very soon.

You can go mad with security but in my opinion the biggest brightest thing is the best it'll deter most thiefs, hidden stuff like isolation switches, pedel boxes etc are good but wont stop them smashing your window then finding out.

A 1998 should have an immo, I don't know why you can start it without the keys, maybe you have a transponder glued somewhere near the antenna.

Mine doesn't I dont think, nothing listed in the handbook, no special keys all genuine Suzuki keys with nothing inside and no way of opening them

No transponder hidden behind cowling either, but I think of I wanted to 'black box' it it'll start stright away.
