Vitara engine size
Vitara engine size
Hi everyone I'm new to this site so please go easy on me!
I've got a 1999 T regs vitara 2 door automatic. It says on the log book that it's a 2.0 v6 however the engine is clearly not a v6! I've spoken to Suzuki and they tell me that it originally had a v6 so it must have had an engine change at some point. Problem is that I can't find anyone who can tell me what kind of engine it is so I'm hoping you guys can help.
It looks to me like a straight 4, 2 litre 16v as the spark plugs are on the top of the rocker cover, and the engine runs vertical from the front of the car unlike the images that I've found of 1.6 16v which run horizontal.
I've contacted the dvla and they were about as much use as a cock flavoured lollipop.
Please help!

Re: Vitara engine size
Possibly a j20 but without pics I couldn't say.
There are a few imports around that had the j20 as standard so there could have just been some confusion when it was first registered in the U.K. If it is an import.
This is a j20, I'm fitting one in my lwb sj

Re: Vitara engine size
That would make sense as the car had only done 55000 miles wth mots to confirm and there is no evidence of an engine change.
I've attached an image of the engine

Re: Vitara engine size
^^ what he said! 100% a j20a so there's probably just been a mix up when it was registered.
Let's see some more pics of the whole vitara then

Re: Vitara engine size
It should say J20A here along with the engine number.

2005-GV 1600se, "Hell" What do I know!
Re: Vitara engine size
Cheers for the photo of the engine number location, I checked it today and it does state that it's a j20 and the number matches the one on the v5 so all is well!
Re: Vitara engine size
Good to hear it! Will be easy to get the v5 changed to take of the "v6" bit just write them a latter explaining that you think it was originally registered wrongly.....or just ignore it completely
Re: Vitara engine size
Ok so now I've checked that the engine number matches the log book (it is a j20a) so my vehicle is a 2.0 16v. I've sent this information off to the dvla (my vitara is a 2.0 v6 on the v5 for some reason).
The problem is that my vehicle was first registered in 1999 but I can't find any information online for any vitara models manufactured in 1999 (3 door hard top) with a j20 engine.
I can't get the vehicle insured without knowing the model (for example jlx,Jx, etc).
Any ideas?
