Fuel Gauge

Currently having problems with my fuel gauge on my 1994 samurai 413. I have dropped the tank and run a new wire straight from the back of the gauge and another wire straight from the negative terminal of the battery, because the original wiring was cut/missing when bought.
When I dropped the tank, looking at the top of the sender it had three terminals, by connecting my live and neutral through power of deduction I managed to get the gauge working but this is only when the tank is dropped, as soon as I put it back up the gauge is either full or off gauge empty. Just wondering whether the third terminal is required or if I just need a new fuel sender unit?
Any help/recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
