Best bet for covering up deep scratches?

The GV has plenty of scratches and chips on the roof from carrying all sorts of bits and bobs. Most are minor others are deeper so was planning on touching up in places to keep the rust at bay. Today one of the delightful kids decided to push the metal gate into the passengers rear side door while I was passing through so it's made a nice gouge along it :argh: Now could do with getting it painted sooner rather than later. Appearance wise not bothered about colour difference or trying to hide where damage has been just wanting it covered to stop the rust. Any recommendations on how best to go about it and what paint any one uses?

Probably 4-5 inches where it's down to the metal

:D good idea that! I was just gonna sand clean then spray over with hammerite. Not losing any sleep over appearance just don't want rust to nibble through!

If your’re not too bothered about looks, sand it, some zinc primer and get a paint match done at a paint suppliers who will mix a rattle can in the right colour.

Due to fading and ageing it won’t match 100% but will give a reasonable finish and prevent rusting.
