hi ppl just a note to introduce myself!
me and a m8 have just bought a sj 410 and plan on doing it up a bit for its mot then doin some offroading :lol:
any hints or tips will be greatfully recieved

welcome to the forum, good choice in motor, I think the 410s have a better engine than the 413s.


First things first dont go near extended shackle lifts as they do more harm than good and apart from that stick some mud terrain tyres on it and go have some fun before you start modifying it they are brilliant in standard form. have a look in the members builds section for inspiration!

to be honest the 2" shackle lift was one of the first things i was going for,why do you not recomend them? looking for some ofset wheels and a decent set of tyres aswell any recomendations???

Shackles reduce you approach/departure angle and will cause your springs to sag to the point that they will end up bent the wrong way or snap, although this really only seems to happen on the front for some reason.

will this make a big diferance tho.im new to offroading so carnt see me going to nuts just yet. :lol: is there another cheep alternative?ivonly payd £300 for the sj and just want some cheep off road fun

My personal favorite set up which I had on my SJ and done on 2 others was 1 pair of shackles on the rear and 1 set of add-a-leafs from llama4x4 on the front. 4 add-a-leafs in my opinion made the ride way way to hard. The weight of the engine worked well with the add-a-leafs and the rear shackles have been fine on the rear. This set up will allow 235-75 x 15 mts if you fold the seams on the rear of the front arches. Thats just how I set mine up for mild lanening and I am still running my Polo like that, I think its a good cheap comprimise.

Welcome to the club :welcome: Add a leafs are a exra leaf that you add to your sping pack to give them more of a curve and give you about 2" lift. Body lift is another cheap option, if you can make it yourself.

Check out http://www.llama4x4.com/page8.htm for the add-a-leaf. I run them on mine and am more than happy with them. They make the ride a bit harsher, but you get use to it.

As for the body lift you basicly put blocks of 2" box section between the body and the chassis. You dont get any more ground clearance, but it does help if you want to get bigger tyers on there.

If you want to get 31" tyers on, you will probably need add-a-leaf and body lift.
