Fifth Gear conversion

Post by khem » Sun Oct 05, 2008 2:01 pm

helloo...this is my first time in yr forumm....so do bare with me..

i'm planning to service my gearbox (change beaings, seals, etc). however i'm wondering if it's possible for me to replce my sj413 fifth gear with the lower samurai fifth gear. Is that possible, will it work, and does it make much of a difference when all is said and done.
am looking forward to yr responces...thank you.

1st of all welcome to the forum!

In theory you can put the lower ration 5th gear in as all the cases (includin the 4gr) are the same.but why would you want to? why not just put a samurai case in and lower the gears all through the range?

where i'm from, the are few sj's, most of which are really oldd....so to find a sammy gearbox will be expensive and will prob be in bad shape. so since i'm planning to redo mine...do u think i should go ahead and change it?

Have just had a look at the gear ratios, the 413 box and the sammy box are the same up to 4th, then 5th is 0.86 in the 413 box and 0.79 in the sammy. Personaly i dont think it would make much of a difference. And I personaly wouldn't go through all the hassel of fitting the sammy 5th gear. Would be interesting to hear if you thought there was much of a difference if you did go ahead with it.

out of interest where are you based??
