first happend sunday night
then again once on moday couple of times tuesday
more last night
now every 100m
driving along in any gear 2wd or 4wd when i get to roughly 35 a shake starts to come up the steering, it then gets worse.
it shakes the whole car LOADS and can only be stopped by slowing down
first i swapped the wheels round and checked ball joints etc...
also took play out of steering box.
gonna get it in tomorrow and have a look, jw if any one else has had this and knows what it is???
was thinking maybe transfur box mounts or something. problem being i dont have much time to look at it as im at work
cheers dave

i had something like that where the steering wheel would sort of jerk from side to side, In the end it turned out my steering damper was buggered, I bought a second hand replacement one and it last a week or so and started doing it again, In the end i bought an aftermarket pro-comp steering damper kit (llama 4x4 do a rough country kit that is the same)
to test your damper you remove it and try and squash it it should move slowly closed, you should then pull it apart, it should open at the same rate as it closed, if one direction is quicker than the other or easier it will need replacing

firstly NEVER drive on tarmac in 4wd, you will wreck your transfer box.
right things to check, some of these i know you've done already but i though i'd list them all
all steering ball joints
steering box
rag joint on steering column
Ujoint on steering column
as tramp says steering damper
leaf spring bushes and the leafs themselves.
Ubolts make sure they are tight, dont just look at them and presume they are.
wheel bearings for play
king pin bearings for play
tyres for abnormal/uneven wear
get tyres balanced if all of the above fail!
think thats about it

king pins are f**ked, and its got a 'new' mot on it, gonna get him to give me to money to repair it, if he says no then i'll threaten to appeal the mot
and i dont drive in 4x lol, i was just eliminating problems

We had the same thing on my Mum's Land Rover Discovery 300TDi a while back when you went over 50mph. We had bearings changed, steering adjusted, re-tracked, new kingpins, nothing seemed to work. The guy at the garage then fitted a steering damper and hey presto, it's better than ever before.

hi, i got the bearings and was gonna fit them today, and i had a mate who knows about this sort of set up better then me (i'm new skool =/ )
he said not worth risking takin the bearing out to find that the king pins a fooooked. i agreed as if they were it would be stuck on a ramp in his bosses work shope. dont think he'd be happy on monday morning.
anyone else had this?
can i get new king pins?
etc......
all info apprecated

do it on the floor with a jack and axle stands! you don't need a ramp to do the kingpins, chances are you won't have to change them anyway, i've never had to yet!
