Re: Newbie .....
fella
this one is on me
hum lifting there are all sorts off ways you can lift your anus
but with any project planing is key.
the best place to start is with your wheels but if you want big then mods are needed
ie cutting the bumper ends off an removing the bumper. then mabey a body lift for the space under the arch.
then shackels and or lifted springs you will need extended brake lines for this.
every one has there own way an plan but we all aim to make an unstoppable off roader.
there are no mistakes is just a learning curve

Re: Newbie .....
the cheapest way to lift your anus is with a shackle lift but shackles have a tendancy to damage springs and also decrease your approach/departure angles (they also dig in on the middle bit of the ruts)
body lift is a good way of getting bigger rubber under the arches but will only lift the truck by 1/2 the additional tyre size. also with a body lift the clerance of the transfer box over the diffs wont be increased causing it to still sit at roughly the same height as the diffs. this means it will ground out when you go over humps or in ruts. this can cause damage to the transfer box/props and the mounts.
personally nothing beats a spring lift or if your feeling adventurous you could go for spring over axle
ive whipped up this little diagram to show you the different setups

Yeah I agree with Dan the best way to go is Spring lift, however if your on a tight budget then go for a 2" body lift to start with and get saving those pennies! the only thing that really makes the difference when off roading is the diff clearence, so the bigger the tyres the better (i think 31s are about ideal for an SJ) but you need 2/3" of lift to squeeze some 31s on.
