Firstly, Hi to all from new member, About 5 years ago was given a 86 410 softop with a blown engine. Totally rebuilt it, ran it for about 18 mths then gave to my niece to learn to drive in. She never used it and has recently given it back. Its one of the best condition original condition sj's i have seen. (will post pic shortly) My question is will a five speed box fit straight in and what other parts will have to be changed? I assume the 5speed will be a longer unit and I will have to change the prop/props. Have no problem doing the work, was a mechanic for 25 years now electrican. Finally if anyone else lives in the southampton area and needs any help/advise please email or ring. 07817148431. Thanks Paul

First off welcome on board ! as far as Im aware the boxes arent interchangeable as i think the four speed was on a 410 and the 5 was on the 413 /samurai but i may be wrong. some body else will be along soon to add weight to the answer!

Hi Matey
Providing that the 5 speed box is a 410/santana gearbox then it will fit with no problems! I put a 5speed in mine a while back and it does make the difference on motorways, only problem is i find that you've got to be doing at least 50MPH before you can really use 5th gear. mind you I am running 31" tyres.

As scott sed, provided it is a 410 gearbox it will fit, as the bell housing on the 413 engine is larger.
You wont need to change props or anything as it is exactly the same case just with a 5th gear squieezed in.

Our 410 Santana came with a 5 speed out of the factory and as someone else has said, you really have to get it going before using 5th on a fast road, but the engine has enough torque for it to be used around town on the flat at 30, reducing noise and fuel consumption some what - and lets face it, both are issues on an SJ!!!
I don't think you'll need to change the props though, they'll probably be ok.
