Both maps show byways. The explorer obviously goes into more detail.
Will the landranger do for route planning? Or is the explorer series noticeably easier to use due to the finer detail?

I always use land rangers, means you don't have to buy as many maps or move between them as often.
However I might have to get another android phone so I can get what Twiss was running on the plain!

Seemed like a useful app.

Im using the explorer 1:25k maps on my phone...
you just want a phone or android device with a fair bit of storage... the maps can be about 40MB each, so if you have 20 areas on your phone thats 800MB! Also after talking with Dan, you either want a phone with lots of RAM so you can load really big maps into it at once, or you will have to keep each map area separate.
Its good isn't it scott!!! Its really handy being able to know where you are going!

Agree with Twiss. I had the whole country divided into six 830mb areas and it lagged hard!
Might try the app again with the smaller tiles Twiss was using as it seem pretty smooth and responsive.
As for actually buying paper maps I always get landranger as to get it in explorer you need 4 times as many maps!
The mapping for the weekend in explorer maps would have cost about £80!

Yeah the maps are £8 each and we went through at least 7 explorer areas!
If anyone needs the maps I can provide information on how to get them.
The phone app i use is no longer available so I will try and extract it from my phone.
OS do their own version, but it works like google maps and downloads the maps as you need them.
It doesn't work as well, and it needs to download a lot to work properly. Not good if you have no signal!!!

OS Mapfinder on the iphone seems ok.

not sure if this will get banned for piracy, but if you like this app you can still buy it straight from the developers which i advise you do, this is just so you can try it out first as the free version is no longer available.
